10.01.2007 - IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING HDA & DJ PROTEUS

For those of you who have been receiving Lab4 & Queen of Clubs mail outs for some time, you’ll know that on the odd occasion when a situation crops up within our scene that we feel very strongly about, or when we have many people from the QC Artist fan base approach us in vast numbers about the same topic of conversation, that we will respond publicly to our entire fan base.

Hence this mail out regarding DJ Proteus at this year’s Hard Dance Awards.

Originally started 4 years ago to apparently help to bring recognition to Underground Hard Dance in an effort for it to be taken more seriously by the press (historically, hard dance has always been largely ignored by the music press compared to mainstream dance music), this year the Hard Dance Awards is being advertised as a “Celebration of Hard Dance”, and for the first time is receiving commercial support from the likes of MTV, Radio 1 and M8 Magazine.

So since the introduction of commercial support, we have most certainly NOT been the only people to notice this year, that many of the clubbing public’s truly favourite Hard Dance DJs and acts – a number of them being some of the strongest forces in Hard Dance for the past few years at least (not to mention some of the most amazing stage performers) - have been dropped into the foyer of Brixton Academy for this event.

Meanwhile, the line-up in the main arena includes some DJs/acts who have not ever made the Top 3 in any of the categories within the Hard Dance Awards over the past three years (let alone actually won any of those categories), or others who are not actually very publicly renound for playing what most of us would consider to be Hard Dance Music...

Now obviously the organisers can book whoever they want for their own event, there is no disputing that at all.

But as this event is apparently all about catering to the voting public and their expectations, our main concern (along with the many hundreds of you who have approached us about this subject in recent months) was for the lack of regard for the billing of DJ Proteus for this particular event.

DJ Proteus has won ‘Best DJ’ at the Hard Dance Awards for two out of the three years it has run so far. He has also been ranked in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 a number of times, an achievement that very few UK DJs can boast, and even more so was named in Top 5 World’s Hardest DJs – an honour that NO other DJ on the Hard Dance Awards line up this year can boast.

With this information about Proteus widely known, common sense would lead most of us to expect that with the way that any artistic award ceremonies are run, that by default alone, last year’s Best DJ would headline the main arena – or at least be part of the main arena line-up… And as it is in fact DJ Proteus that we are talking about here, we all know that there is actually no other DJ on this scene (other than our good friend and amazing Hard Dance Veteran, Mark EG) who puts on a more energetic and entertaining performance on a huge stage such as Brixton Academy than him – this is why he has earned enough votes by you, the clubbing public to actually take out ‘Best DJ’ for the past two out of three years.

Yet this past year, possibly DJ Proteus’ biggest year to date – the organisers of the Hard Dance Awards have billed him as 11th on the line up… Not only is he not on the main room line-up despite his achievements that are totally related to this particular event – and where hundreds of people agree that he should be, but he has not even been billed as headlining the foyer… What’s that all about then?

At first we really couldn’t decide if we were offended or completely bemused by this to say the least – DJ Proteus has headlined the main room at Brixton Academy more than half a dozen times over the past few years (mainly because he is one of very few acts on this scene to be able to fill such a massive stage and keep punters enthralled by his strong image, his amazing choice of tunes – many unreleased world exclusives that no other DJ has access to – and entertaining stage antics second to none) yet at the Hard Dance Awards, a ceremony that he has taken out the top award two years in a row, he gets demoted to a tiny DJ booth in the foyer and billed under 10 other DJs, most of whom have not yet taken out any HD awards at all, let alone awards in consecutive years. It’s also rather interesting to note that 7 out of those 10 Djs billed above Proteus this year happen to all be from one London Dj Agency, who is one of the main supporters/organisers for this event…

We did approach the organisers about this billing a number of times at the beginning of December and asked for a courtesy response so we could move forward. They were also told that if we did not hear back from them, that Dj Proteus would be pulled from the line-up.

The organisers have purposely chosen not to respond to us about this situation at all.

So as a result, and after much consideration as well as many conversations with so many of the punters approaching us about this at gigs over the past 2 months to express their total disgust at the organisers for the way that this year’s awards ceremony seems to be panning out now that they have ‘commercial support’, we made the executive decision to withdraw DJ Proteus from the line-up for this year’s Hard Dance Awards. The organisers were made aware of this, yet are continuing to advertise him as being on the line-up. We now consider this to be blatant misadvertising to the public that they have made no attempt to change, hence this statement.

Now let us be very clear that this statement is not just about us having a moan because Proteus wasn’t on the main line-up - which no doubt, some people will try to their best to portray as Queen of Clubs having a case of sour grapes about some billing issues…

In actual fact this is just one of a number of what we consider to be real ethical issues that have come up this year in regards to the Hard Dance Awards. There has also been some rather questionable issues come to light in regards to the rather regimented and controlled voting system this year, as well the ‘enforcement’ of making featured artists choose their Top 10 ONLY from Track it Down. (Our Artists amongst many others throughout the scene were told that if they did not choose from trackitdown.net they would not be featured at all – hence no Lab4 being featured on the event site despite also taking out an award two years running – the ONLY artists other than Proteus to do this at these awards so far).

The Queen of Clubs Agency and all it’s artists as a collective have decided that we do not feel comfortable enough to comply with, or want to be a part of this ‘commercialised bowing down’ - even though we are very aware that this statement is going to upset the ‘self appointed powers that be’ (and who knows if it may affect the chance of Proteus winning Best Hard Dance DJ for the third year in a row, one wouldn’t like to speculate). But the fact is that winning is not what it’s about for us and it never has been – what’s important to us is keeping the scene real, keeping the information that is given to the public real, and pleasing the people on the dance floor – NOT bowing down to larger brandings who try to dominate the scene and take all the personality and individuality out of it.

We thank all of you who took the time to again vote for DJ Proteus this year – we know that in some parts of the world we have received more votes for Hurricane Harri than EVER before – and all without bombarding your inbox with begging letters, or going to clubs and covering punters with ‘vote me No1’ stickers, as seems to be the going trend for those Djs not secure enough to just trust in the publics opinion…

At the end of the day it should always be remembered that the results for such awards are only an indication of the percentage of clubbers who actually vote in the first place – it is not an indication of what the entire scene truly feels about any one or number of artists at all – and so for Djs to place their self worth on these results could actually be dangerously inaccurate and cause unnecessary depression!!

We offer absolutely no apologies to anyone who may be offended by this letter. It is our own opinion to our own fan base – and any facts that have been stated here by us can be backed up by correspondence with the organisers that we have purposely kept.

Adam LAB4 has also put his own statement about this situation up on www.lab4.com
